Adult men have great potential to prevent future male perpetration through mentoring and role modeling for younger males. The presence of positive male role models decreases a boy’s chance for violence perpetration, yet much of the male youth in Providence grow up in single family households with the mother as the only parent.
Most men are not violent and want to see an end to violence against women, but many are not sure how to help. One in three men do not actively support community efforts to stop violence against women because no one had asked them to get involved or they do not know how to help.
Providence Men’s Project was created in response to this problem. PMP provides a space, both online and in-person, for men to learn about domestic violence and violence prevention.
This year's priority is to provide men with tools needed to engage male youth in conversations about relationships, masculinity, violence, conflict resolution, and equality. Our resources are available for professionals working with youth but parents and caregivers are encouraged to use them as well.
By providing links to videos, essays, games, along with providing in-person training, workshops, and individual consultation from Men's Initiative you can help put an end to violence before it even starts.
For more information on in-person training, visit the facilitator training page or contact us at 401.861.2761.
The Providence Men's Project was created by Providence DELTA and is managed by the Men's Initiative at the Women's Center of Rhode Island.

In 2010, Providence Police responded to 1,194 calls and made 921 arrests for domestic violence. Of cases responded to, 455 victims had visible injuries, 147 required medical attention, and 121 went to a medical facility. There were four domestic-violence related murders in Providence; one child was present in the home during one of the murders. Children who experience domestic violence in the home are at high risk for future perpetrator, if male, and a victim, if female. Overall, Providence had a total of 1214 violence crimes, including 15 murders, 74 forcible rapes, 720 aggravated assaults, and 405 robberies in 2010. The majority of these violent crimes were committed by males and many are young men.
